Historic Tours

New for 2026 we are offering limited tours of the grounds and exterior of the Abbey building conducted by local historian, Stephen Nunn. Stephen has known the Abbey all his life and has become something of an expert about its history.

A historic Tudor-style house with black and white timber framing, brick chimney, and a garden with colorful flowers and three people walking.

After a brief introduction of the evolution of the Abbey from 1180 to present day, the guide will explain how the building was extended in the 17th century.

He will then peel back the layers to re-discover the parts of the surviving east wing of the original monastic cloister. Proceeding past the surviving Chapter House and the site of the Abbey Church, to the lawn and the statue of the Abbey's founder, Robert Mantell, the tour will end with the spectacular structure that would still be recognisable to the Premonstratensian Canons today.

This is a not to be missed moving experience that promises time travel back to the Abbey's spectacular past.

Three visitors walking through a lush garden with purple flowers, one holding a white umbrella for shade, and another wearing a red hat.
